从字面上看，在某物的顶上，停留着，引申意思是掌握、控制、管理，有居高临下，大权在握的感觉。
e.g. Studying isn't hard if you keep on top of it.
只要你掌握了学习方法，学习不是很难。

Mayday这个词很容易让人联想到阳光明媚、暖洋洋的五月天，可事实上它却是遇险的飞机、船只等使用的国际无线电呼救信号，可人们为什么会在危急时刻使用“五月的第一天”作为呼救信号呢？
在成为国际呼救信号之前，Mayday本来只是一个传统节日。
在五月的第一天，人们搬出丰盛的美食，载歌载舞，欢庆春天的到来，这也是国际五一劳动节（May Day）的起源。但是，作为呼救信号的mayday和五月的第一天就没有什么关系了，它起源于法语词m'aidez，表示“帮帮我，救命”。
Mayday之所以这么拼写，只是因为这个单词的发音和法语中的m'aidez（help me）或短语venez m'aider（come help me）的后半部分的读音相同。此外，Mayday读来琅琅上口，很适合用于杂音和静电噪声较大的远距离无线电传播中，相对比较容易从嘈杂的声音中“脱颖而出”。
顺便补充一下，国际通用的另一个呼救信号SOS并不代表任何意义，只是因为它简单好记才被选中的。所以如果以后有人跟你扯它代表“Save Our Souls”或“Save Our Ship”之类的鬼话，你可千万别相信。
